The practical workshop procedure

Remove old pads and clips, clean the bracket with a wire brush, and grease the slide pins with high-temperature silicone lubricant.
Compress the piston slowly with a C-clamp and the reservoir cap slightly loose; on electric parking brakes, put the system into service mode with an EPB-capable OBD2 tool first.
Fit new pads and hardware, torque the caliper bolts to spec (typically 25–35 lb-ft), pump the pedal 6–8 times before moving, then bed the pads in with six moderate stops from 40 to 15 mph without coming to a full halt.

Do I have to replace rotors with pads?
Not always. Measure rotor thickness with a micrometer against the minimum stamped on it; if it is above spec and the surface is flat, a $15–$25 resurface is enough. Any pulsation or being under minimum means replacement.
Why do new pads squeal?
