How to Clean a Mass Air Flow Sensor and Restore Acceleration

Why this happens
The mass air flow sensor measures incoming air so the computer can meter fuel. Its hot wire or sensing film is extremely delicate, and any film of oil or dust makes it under-report airflow — producing a lean mixture and hesitation. Cleaning takes ten minutes with an $8 spray and often saves a $150–$320 sensor.

The practical workshop procedure
Shut the engine off, disconnect the battery negative for five minutes, then unplug the sensor connector.
Remove the two retaining screws (usually Torx T20) and withdraw the sensor without touching its elements.
Spray only dedicated MAF cleaner (never carb cleaner or generic alcohol) — 10–15 bursts onto the wire and film with no wiping or contact.
Let it air dry completely for 15–20 minutes — never wipe or blow it dry, since the element breaks with a single touch.
Reinstall the sensor, connector and battery, run the engine 10 minutes to relearn, then clear codes and test full acceleration.

Can I use carb cleaner instead?
No. Carb and brake cleaner are chemically aggressive and strip the protective coating on the sensing element. Use dedicated MAF cleaner only — it costs $8 and there is no safe substitute.
The code came back after cleaning — is the sensor dead?
Not necessarily. First check for unmetered air leaks downstream (cracked hoses, an unsealed filter housing, the PCV hose), which cause the same code. If those are sound and the live reading makes no sense, the sensor has failed.
How do I verify the sensor reading?
With a live-data scan tool: at idle it should read 2–7 grams per second, and at full throttle 80–150 g/s on a 2.0-litre engine. A flat, unchanging reading or zero means a failed sensor or circuit.
How often should I clean it?
At every air filter change (12,000–15,000 miles) as prevention, or immediately when hesitation or a lean code appears. Preventive cleaning does no harm as long as the correct spray is used.
