The problem in brief

Transmission fluid is the most expensive silent mistake in car maintenance. Many manufacturers print «lifetime fluid», which means the design life of the unit, not the life of your car. In hot climates and stop-start traffic, fluid oxidises after 60,000-80,000 km, friction performance in the clutch packs drops, and shudder begins. The opposite mistake is just as common: pressure-flushing a 200,000 km transmission that has never been serviced can dislodge deposits that were helping maintain internal pressure, and it fails weeks later.

  4. Over 200,000 km with no service history: do two drain-and-fills 1,000 km apart instead of a pressure flush
  5. Ask for the filter and pan magnet to be changed and cleaned — accumulated debris is free diagnostic evidence
  6. Set the level at the factory-specified fluid temperature (usually 40-50°C), never cold
